West Sumatera

West Sumatra is a province located on the west coast of Sumatra island, Indonesia and is the eleventh largest province in Indonesia with a capital of Padang.
The province is identical to the Minangkabau homeland, and was once a gold-producing region later became the production center for pepper, as well as playing an important role in trade involving traders from India, China, Arab, Portuguese and English and Dutch.

West Sumatra is located in the central western part of Sumatra island, has a low land on the west coast, and the volcanic highlands formed Bukit Barisan stretches from northwest to southeast. Coastline of the province is entirely in contact with the Indian Ocean along 375 km. Mentawai Islands, located in the Indian Ocean and a few tens of kilometers off the coast of West Sumatra province is included in this.

The majority of the population is ethnic Minangkabau of West Sumatra. In areas Pasaman other than clan Minangkabau also dwelt clan Batak and clan Mandailing. Mentawai clan found in the Mentawai Islands. In some cities in the West Sumatra city of Padang are mainly ethnic Chinese, Tamil and clan Nias, and in some areas of transmigration (Sitiung, Lunang Silaut, Padang Gelugur and others) there is also the clan Java.
